It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and longtime community member, Kapo Kalan. Kapo passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 3rd, at his home in Vancouver, Washington, surrounded by his family.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday August 11th.

Kapo was born in 1935 in Sassun, Turkey, to his mother, Hamlo, and father, Donabed Kalan. One of five children—three daughters and two sons—he spent his early years in the village. When Kapo was 15, his mother tragically passed away, and he was lovingly raised by their paternal grandmother. At the age of 20, Kapo served in the military for two years. He married his wife, Arshaluys, in the village, and together they had four children: sons Aslan, Garbis, and Krikor, and daughter Mari. Kapo was a wheat and livestock farmer and worked tirelessly to provide for his family.

In 1966, the family moved to Istanbul, where they became active members of the Armenian church and community. In 1979, they relocated to Armenia, where Kapo worked in a factory. He watched his children marry and became a proud grandfather.

In 1990, Kapo and Arshaluys immigrated to the United States with their son Krikor, and with their son Garbis and his family. They first settled in Los Angeles, where Kapo retired after many years of hard work. In 1996, they moved to Vancouver, Washington, where Kapo spent the rest of his life surrounded by family.

Kapo’s life was filled with many new beginnings, from his village in Sassun to cities and countries far from his homeland. He always held tightly to his family and his Armenian roots. He will be remembered for his deep love for his children and grandchildren, his hard work, and his commitment to keeping Armenian traditions and heritage alive.

Kapo was predeceased by his loving wife, Arshaluys; his parents and all of his siblings. He is survived by his four children—Aslan, Garbis, Krikor, and Mari—along with 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.

Խորը տխրությամբ հայտնում ենք մեր սիրելի հայրիկի, պապիկի, մեծ պապիկի և երկարամյա համայնքի անդամի՝ Կապո Քալանի մահվան լուրը։ Կապոն հանգչեց խաղաղությամբ կիրակի՝ օգոստոսի 3-ին, իր տան մեջ՝ Վանքուվեր, Վաշինգթոն, ընտանիքի անդամների շրջապատում։

Կապոն ծնվել է 1935 թվականին Սասունում, Թուրքիա, մայրիկի՝ Համբլոյի և հայրիկի՝ Դոնաբեդ Քալանի ընտանիքում։ Լինելով հինգ երեխաներից մեկը(երեք քույր և երկու եղբայր), նա իր մանկությունն անցկացրել է գյուղում։ Երբ Կապոն 15 տարեկան էր, մայրը ցավալիորեն մահացավ, և նրան ու նրա քույր-եղբայրներին մեծացրեց հայրական տատիկը։ 20 տարեկանում Կապոն երկու տարի ծառայեց բանակում։ Նա ամուսնացավ իր սիրելի կնոջ՝ Արշալույսի հետ, և նրանք միասին ունեցան չորս զավակ՝ որդիներ Ասլան, Կարպիս և Գրիգոր, և դուստր Մարի։ Կապոն զբաղվում էր ցորենի և անասունների հողագործությամբ և քրտնաջան աշխատում էր ընտանիքի ապահովության համար։

1966 թվականին ընտանիքը տեղափոխվեց Ստամբուլ, որտեղ նրանք դարձան հայկական եկեղեցու և համայնքի ակտիվ անդամներ։ 1979 թվականին նրանք տեղափոխվեցին Հայաստան, որտեղ Կապոն աշխատում էր գործարանում։ Նա տեսավ, թե ինչպես ամուսնացան իր զավակները և դարձավ հպարտ պապիկ։

1990 թվականին Կապոն և Արշալույսը գաղթեցին Միացյալ Նահանգներ՝ իրենց որդի Գրիգորի, ինչպես նաև որդի Կարպիսի և նրա ընտանիքի հետ։ Սկզբում նրանք հաստատվեցին Լոս Անջելեսում, որտեղ Կապոն թոշակի անցավ երկար տարիների աշխատանքից հետո։ 1996 թվականին նրանք տեղափոխվեցին Վանքուվեր,, Վաշինգթոն,, որտեղ Կապոն իր կյանքի մնացած տարիներն անցկացրեց ընտանիքի շրջապատում։

Կապոյի կյանքը լի էր նոր սկիզբներով՝ իր ծննդավայր Սասունից մինչև քաղաքներ ու երկրներ, որոնք հեռու էին իր հայրենիքից։ Նա միշտ ամուր կառչած էր իր ընտանիքին և հայկական արմատներին։ Կապոն կհիշվի իր զավակների և թոռների հանդեպ ունեցած անսահման սիրով, իր քրտնաջան աշխատանքով և հայկական ավանդույթներն ու ժառանգությունը պահպանելու անշեղ նվիրվածությամբ։

Կապոն մահից առաջ կորցրել էր իր սիրելի կնոջը՝ Արշալույսին, ինչպես նաև իր ծնողներին և բոլոր քույր-եղբայրներին։ Նրանից հետո կենդանի են մնացել չորս զավակները՝ Ասլան, Կարպիս,, Գրիգոր և Մարի, ինչպես նաև 10 թոռ և 6 հրաշալի ծոռ, որոնք հավերժ իրենց սրտերում կպահեն նրա հիշատակը։
